In Sweden är mopeds from Zündapp popularäand despite the fact that it has been many years since production ceased, a Zündapp moped in operation is not an unusual sight. Contributing factors to its popularity are the availability of spare parts and modifications, and the perceived, and now realised, ease of operation. Although the ZZD models sold in Sweden were originally designed for higher power output, they were to some extent visually recognisable, but mainly mechanically as they exhibited similarity in layman's terms for the purpose of modifying engine power for speed or power (=tuning)
Also other moped manufacturers use engines from Zuuml;ndapp. One example of this is the Swedish moped and bicycle manufacturer Trelleborgs velocipedfabrik which manufactured the moped Mustang whose "Mamba" and "Cobra" models wereouml;nte prominence as a Swedish price alternative and which were mainly sold via Cooperative Federation stores.
All Zündapp mopeds sold in Sweden from the 1960s onwards had an air-cooled 50 cm3 two-stroke engine with an aluminium cylinder. The engine was essentially the same and with few exceptions, parts from an engine from 1960s in an engine from 1980s and vice versa. However, an important change was the shift from oval ("pyramid") to square cylinders, which also affected the design of the piston and connecting rod. Zuuml;ndapp mopeds and engines imported into Sweden were "throttled" to comply with Swedish law. Originally, the drive system for the Mustang Cobra was 6.25 hp
