Sachs

ZF Sachs AG, formerly Fichtel & Sachs, is a German industrial company in Schweinfurt. It is a major supplier of components to the automotive industry. Since 2001, the company has been managed by ZF Friedrichshafen AG.

HISTORY

The company was founded 1895 as Schweinfurter Präzisions-Kugellagerwerke Fichtel & Sachs by Ernst Sachs and Karl Fichtel. 1903 the Torpedo brand of bicycles, now produced in large numbers, was launched, ushering in a major boom. Fichtel & Sachs began to produce engines, parts and couplings for the German automotive industry.

The company also produced two, three and four-speed moped engines that were used by many moped manufacturers in Sweden from the mid-fifties to the early nineties. There was also an automatic engine called Saxonette. The moped engines were known for their reliability and smooth running. Even larger engines that were fitted to several Swedish and foreign motorcycles were manufactured by Fichtel & Sachs.
